EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 23: A high level BJP delegation held one hour long meeting with Kashmir Committee Chairman Ram Jethmalani and its other two members Madhu Kishwar and V K Grover.
The state BJP delegation was led by State President Shamsher Singh Manhas and consisting of National Executive Member Dr Nirmal Singh, National Executive Member & Chief Spokesperson Dr Jitendra Singh, party MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma and State General Secretary Sat Sharma
Making a strong point for the abrogation of Article-370, the BJP representatives suggested an open debate to discuss merits and demerits as well as advantages and disadvantages of this article.
BJP delegation submitted a written memorandum to the Kashmir Committee in which it stated that there was dire need of building the confidence of those who have constantly suffered due to Pakistan’s military attempts on Jammu and Kashmir, communally motivated secessionist terrorism, deprivation of basic democratic rights in Kashmir-centric political system. Certain specific measures were suggested by the BJP delegation which included setting up of Provincial Councils in both Jammu & Kashmir provinces with adequate administrative and financial powers, grant of Union Territory status to Ladakh and Delimitation of the state assembly and parliament seats as per the principles given in People’s Representation Act.
The BJP delegation strongly favoured empowerment of people of the state at grass-root level by extending the 73rd & 74th amendments of the Indian Constitution thereby making the Panchayat and local bodies more effective.
Referring to the problem of refugees, the BJP memorandum makes a strong plea for grant of citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan.
BJP also reiterated its demand for the end of regional discrimination and equitable distribution of financial resources, political empowerment, government jobs and admissions to government controlled educational institution among the regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
Referring to the issue of proposed Central University in Jammu the BJP delegation advocated for immediate steps to start the working of Central University and also early resolution of other issues causing regional discontent including upgradation of Jammu Airport, construction of fly-overs, Gandola Projects etc.
Taking up the cause of weaker sections of the society, the BJP has demanded justice and fair deal for SCs, STs and OBCs.
The Kashmir Committee carefully heard all the issues of concern put forward by BJP delegation and assured to follow them up.
