Malik tells BJP not to hoist flag at Lal Chowk

Naseer Ganai  | Srinagar, January 5, 2011
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik on Tuesday cautioned the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of BJP, against unfurling the Tricolour at Lal Chowk on January 26. Malik said if the BJYM went ahead with its plan, "some other (flag) will be hoisted in Lal Chowk" in its place.
The BJYM had " decided to challenge the separatists by hoisting the tricolour at Lal Chowk" as "the national flag is not hoisted in many parts of Kashmir". Malik termed the move as a grave provocation and asked the party to desist from such an act. The JKLF chief was speaking at a seminar organised by the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference.
Malik referred to an article by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said the BJP was following a beaten track though Vajpayee had declared his government will follow "bold and innovative designs" for a peaceful and prosperous future. He said the BJP should remember Vajpayee's promise.
He said the state's approach towards Kashmiris had not changed although they have moved away from violence to a peaceful movement. "The state's policy continues to be aggressive and efforts were being made to push peaceful protesters to violence," he said. " The state does not allow even peaceful protests. It goes after people who protest peacefully and allows those who kill them to go scot- free," Malik added.  He plans to file a petition before the high court seeking a directive to the police to file FIRs against those police personnel who opened fire that led to the killings in the Valley over the past five months.
