Parliamentary panel ignored sacrifices: Geelani

Srinagar, Dec 31: The chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday said the fact finding report recently issued by the Parliamentary Group focused only on the recent phase of resistance movement and neglected the sacrifices of Kashmiris since 1947.  “The report deals with incidents taking place before and after the recent peaceful agitation while ignoring the unrest, uncertainty and painful incidents continuing in the state for the past 63- years,” Geelani said in a statement.

“The killing of 112 youth in Kashmir was not the cause of freedom slogan. The fact is that lakhs of people have been slain and lakhs others forced to migrate from Kashmir as a result of the freedom slogan,” he added.
Geelani said had the Kashmiris raised their freedom slogan for the first time and received bullets for the first time too, the Parliamentary Groups’ report could be termed as just to some extent but they (Kashmiris) have been receiving bullets and enduring innumerable persecutions and atrocities for the past 63-years for pursuing the cause of freedom. “It is surprising that the group has shut its eyes on the 63-year history of Kashmiris’ struggle and focused on 5- month agitation. The report is also strangely silent on the 5-point formula we have openly put forth before Indian government and discussed threadbare with the Group,” he said.
Geelani said the group had also tried to distort the facts by describing pro-freedom people as separatists. “Since Kashmiris had never merged with India, calling them separatists does not carry any meaning.”
The Parliamentary group visiting Kashmir consisted of veteran and experienced politicians who could never be ignorant of the fact that Kashmir has never been part of India. Besides, they are well familiar that unrest and uncertainty started well from the day when India armed forces landed in Kashmir following an agreement signed undemocratically between one individual and Indian rulers against the wishes its people,” said Geelani, adding that it was not for the first time that Kashmiris had come to streets in 2010.

Geelani said the report no doubt recommended some measures for providing some benefits, concessions and relief to the people but “it is silent about the basic issue.”  Reacting to the report that all the Kashmiri groups are ready for talks, Geelani said, “We had clarified to the Group that we were not in principle averse to talks but holding talks bilaterally had always proved futile. Meanwhile, Geelani will undergo medical check-up at the SKIMS Soura on Saturday.

In a statement, the Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar said Geelani would undergone Endoscopy and Kidney Function Test. “Geelani Sahib is feeling weakness since past few days. Doctors have advised him to undergo tests.”  Pertinently, during the past 115 days. Geelani Sahib has been placed under house arrest. This has gradually affected his health,” Akbar said.
