2 Hizb ‘militants’ arrested in Kangra

16 Dec. 2010
Shimla: Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were today arrested by Himachal Pradesh Police from a hideout at Kotla village in Jawali tehsil of Kangra district. The two have been identified as Jameed Ahmad (35) and Ghulam Nabi (25), both residents of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir that borders Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Police said they were hiding in Jawali since November.

Additional Director General of Police, Crime Investigation Department, ID Bhandari, said, “Documentary evidence like ID cards recovered from them show that Jameed Ahmad is a terrorist belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit and was active in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir after being trained in Pakistan. Ghulam Nabi was his associate”. Bhandari said a pistol and some live bullets were recovered from Jameed Ahmad’s possession. During investigation, Ahmad revealed he had killed two SPOs in Doda district. While a flushing out operation was going on against their militant outfit in Kashmir, both had taken shelter in Kotla village.

The police have registered an FIR against Ahmad and Nabi at Jawali Police Station under sections 419, 122 123 and 34 of Indian Penal Code for faking their identities during hiding, sedition and anti-national activities. Sections 25 and 54 of Indian Arms Act have also been applied. The duo had prepared forged identity cards to hide their identities. The police are trying to ascertain the route of entry of these militants into the state, looking at the porous nature of the Doda-Chamba border that is at present manned by Armed Reserve Battalions of Himachal Pradesh Police, while earlier the ITBP was also posted here. In the past, stray incidents of crossing over of militants from Kashmir through the Doda-Chamba border into Himachal have been reported. The only major incident of killings by them in Himachal was reported on August 2, 1998 when 35 labourers were killed in Kalaban-Satrundi in Chamba.
