Home: Curfew continues in north Kashmir village


 Srinagar :Curfew continued in some parts of the north Kashmir district of Bandipora for the sixth day today even though separatists, religious and Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Mohammad Akbar Lone made appeals for peace. An indefinite curfew was imposed in Anderkote and Sumbal in Bandipora in north Kashmir after a clash between two groups on December 20.

Official sources said fruit trees were damaged by rival groups in the village. The trouble started when a vehicle carrying Muharram mourners was attacked by some people at Anderkote. The trouble later spread to Sumbal. They said five people were injured and two houses were set on fire during the clashes. The authorities imposed curfew as a precautionary measure to restore peace, they said.
Source said three people were injured when security forces, guarding the house of a political activist, opened fire to disperse the mob pelting stones. Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yaseen Malik along with leaders from both sects arranged a meeting between local residents from both the sides on December 22. 

The chairmen of both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) had appealed for peace and alleged that mainstream political parties and agencies were involved in the incident. Speaker, Legislative Assembly and MLA Sonawari Mohammad Akbar Lone presided over the meeting attended by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Samoo; IGP, Kashmir, S M Sahai; DIG,  Baramulla,Muneer Khan; Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Manzoor Ahmad Lone; SP Bandipora, Junaid and prominent people of the two sections of Sumbal Anderkote here today.

In the meeting, which lasted for one hour, the representatives of both the communities of Sumbal Anderkote assured the Speaker and administration that they will continue to live in the same traditional atmosphere of brotherhood for which they are known since centuries. 

The Speaker hoped that all the people of the area irrespective of caste creed, colour and sections will maintain peace and tranquillity and extend full cooperation to the administration in maintaining law and order. Mr Lone appealed to all the religious heads and Ulemas of both sections to play their positive role for further strengthening age old brotherhood between the two sections.
