The state cabinet, which met in Jammu on Friday morning under the chairmanship of chief minister Omar Abdullah approved amendments in the J&K Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, to pave the way for setting up of SEC. “The cabinet approved the amendments in the act and recommended the setting up of a state election commission,” an official spokesman said.

Jammu and Kashmir will have to move the state legislature for its attestation. After the bill’s passage, the state government will formally set up its separate election commission, which will be first of its kind in the state. The draft bill had been prepared on the recommendation of an expert committee which was constituted on August 18, 2009, in consultation with the law and finance department after demands from various quarters for amendments in the act.
