Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday took a detailed review of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir with a special thrust on measures taken for the smooth conduct of the Amarnath Yatra, beginning later this month.
Mr. Chidambaram, who arrived on a three-day visit to the Valley here on Monday, chaired a high-level meeting along with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Top State government officials, including Chief Secretary Madhav Lal, Principal Secretary (Home) B.R. Sharma , Director-General of Police Kuldip Khoda, Director-General CRPF K. Vijay Kumar, Director-General BSF Raman Shrivastav and the head of the Intelligence Bureau in Kashmir briefed him about the law and order situation in the backdrop of last year's summer unrest. They detailed the measures taken by the State government for ensuring peace and normality in the State. Security measures for the coming Amarnath yatra were also discussed.
Sources told The Hindu that Mr. Chidambaram congratulated the State government for the smooth and successful conduct of the panchayat elections, which were held in the State after a gap of 30 years.
He asked the government to empower the panchayats to realise the dream of taking democratic governance on the doorstep of the people
