Srinagar, KONS: The chairman of the Hurriyat (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, on Friday said that Indian military commanders advocated the continuation of the AFSPA in the state because it gave them open licence to kill Kashmiri youth.
Expressing his stand on Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), General-Officer-Commanding in Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command Lt Gen B S Jaswal today said the Act is must for the functioning of security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. I had time and again spoken on AFSPA and also our Chief and the Ministry of Defence has spoken and cleared their stand on the issue,'' Lt Gen Jaswal this afternoon told reporters in a press conference at Northern Command Headquarters at Udhampur.
The Army Commander was addressing the media ahead of the Cabinet Committee on security meet to discuss the proposal of amendment to the controversial AFSPA.
On present security situation in J&K, the Army Commander while expressing satisfaction said, the internal and external situation on the borders is under control. He added that as far as the internal security is concerned, a dynamic situation emerged in the North of Pir Panchal and that is what he termed as agitation terrorism.
He blamed Pakistan for what he termed as agitational terrorism in Kashmir adding, "We have intercepts that stone pelting terrorism was guided and directed from across the border in Pakistan".
Meanwhile, the Hurriyat (G) spokesman, Ayaz Akbar, said that Geelani would undergo endoscopy and the kidney function test at the SKIMS on Saturday. Doctors had prescribed the investigations after Geelani persistently complained of back ache and light pain in the abdomen, he said.
According to the spokesman, Geelani’shealth had deteriorated due to the impact of continuous house arrest for 115 days, during which his political and social life had been totally curtailed even to the extent of barring him from attending Friday prayers.
