JAMMU, Dec 25: Army and police today launched a major crackdown on the hide-outs of two dreaded divisional commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen outfits—Ghulam Nabi Sheikh alias Javaid Qureshi and Jameel Ahmed alias Nissar Qureshi in Doda district and recovered a large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives including six AK rifles, for the first time in a single operation in the recent past.
While Javaid Qureshi broke down in the custody of Doda police, Jameel Qureshi disclosed his hide-outs during sustained interrogation by Himachal Pradesh Police in Kangra district. A Doda police team would shortly proceed to Kangra to take custody of Jameel Qureshi and his associate Ghulam Nabi, both residents of Marmat. A production warrant for taking their custody has already been obtained by Doda police from the court.
Official sources said three major hide-outs of Javaid Qureshi, who was arrested from Dehradun by Uttaranchal police along with his associate Tanveer Ahmed on December 10, were today unearthed and destroyed by police parties of operation wing of Doda police.
A huge quantity of arms, ammunition, explosives and other items have been recovered from the hide-outs. Recoveries included 6 AK rifles, five of which were seized from the hideouts of Javaid Qureshi and another at the behest of Jameel Qureshi, 450 rounds, 20 magazines, 18 Chinese grenades, detonators, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), battery chargers, pencils cells, pithoo bags, mobile handsets and some other items.
This was for the first time that six AK rifles were recovered in a single operation in the recent past. Police had earlier destroyed his two hideouts in Marmat in which one Pika gun and one AK rifle besides other arms, ammunition and explosive items had been seized.
Police and Special Operations Group (SOG) in remote areas of Marmat smashed today’s three hideouts of Javaid Qureshi. With today’s recoveries, almost all hideouts of Javaid Qureshi have been destroyed in Marmat area, where he was operating since 1993 and had managed some hideouts considered to be safe for him. All these hideouts have been busted and entire recovery made from there.
Sources described recovery of six AK rifles including five from Qureshi as a "very major success of police’’ and a "severe setback’’ to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in Doda district. Senior police officers of Doda declined to disclose the recoveries made from the hideouts of Javaid Qureshi saying police authorities in Jammu were scheduled to brief the media. When approached for comments, DIG Doda-Ramban range, Manish Kumar Sinha said he was not aware of the recoveries.
However, he disclosed that a Doda police team would shortly proceed to Kangra in Himachal Pradesh to take custody of Jameel Ahmed alias Nissar Qureshi and Ghulam Nabi after completion of their police remand. Both of them had been taken on remand by Kangra police for interrogation to know whether some more militants from Doda had infiltrated in Himachal Pradesh.

Sources said Jameel has already disclosed the identity of five militants, who had taken shelter in Shimla after migrating from Doda. All of them had shifted their hideouts after the arrest of Jameel Qureshi and were untraced since then even after a series of raids conducted by Himachal police at various suspected hideouts of the ultras.
On the basis of an information given by Himachal police on the disclosures of Jameel Qureshi, security forces today raided a hideout of the militants at Chaprian in Marmat and recovered one AK rifle, three magazines, 84 rounds, one Chinese grenade, one I Con radio set, one mobile telephone with Aircel SIM card, one fake identity card and Rs 45,000 Indian currency.
Sources said more recoveries could be made once Doda police takes custody of Jameel Qureshi and Ghulam Nabi from Kangra police after the completion of their remand there. Doda police have already procured a production warrant from the local court to take custody of Qureshi and Nabi from Kangra police as they were wanted in a series of subversive activities in the district.
Sources said Javaid Qureshi has disclosed during his questioning that he along with Tanveer Ahmed had proceeded from Doda to Jammu by a TATA Sumo and then took a bus from Jammu to Chandigarh from where he left for Dehradun, Uttaranchal. He stayed there for a fortnight along with Tanveer in a rented room and was returning from the clinic of a doctor for treatment of his knee when police captured him.
