Resolution on Kashmiri Pandits in US House

Washington : Influential Democratic Congressman Frank Pallone has introduced a resolution in the US House of Representative recognising that the religious freedom and human rights violations of Kashmiri Pandits has been ongoing since 1989.

The resolution condemns the extremist violence, lack of religious freedom, and human rights violations committed against Kashmiri Pandits, which they have endured for more than two decades.

It also insists that terrorist infrastructure in the region must be dismantled and terrorists should be held accountable for their actions.

Noting that Kashmiri Pandits are the original inhabitants of Kashmir, tracing their heritage and culture back several millennia; the resolution says that Kashmiri Pandits have been the victims of documented human rights violations resulting in the severe curtailment of their religious freedom for more than two decades.

Stating that Kashmiri Pandit population has declined from 400,000 in 1989 to a current level of less than 4,000 in the Kashmir valley and many Pandits continue to live in refugee camps; the resolution observes that international human rights organisations have noted the campaign of intimidation and violence directed by foreign militants and foreign terrorist organizations against Kashmiri Pandits.

The resolution has been welcomed by the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).

"While too many policy makers in Washington D.C. do little to highlight the plight of Kashmiri Pandits, Congressman Pallone has taken the lead in raising awareness about this critical matter," said HAF's director Samir Kalra.

"HAF is pleased that an issue it has pursued with Congressman Pallone's help for several years has been introduced in the House again," Kalra said.

"The introduction of H.Res. 387 is not only significant for Kashmiri Hindus and the Hindu American community, but also furthers America's commitment to promoting religious freedom around the world," continued Kalra.

Special US Resolution vindicates stand of KPS : Panun Kashmir

Jammu, (6 Aug. 2011) : Expressing satisfaction over introduction of a special resolution on Kashmiri Pandits in the US House of Representatives, Panun Kashmir today said the resolution has vindicated their stand that the community is a victim of terrorist violence, aided and abetted by Pakistan.

"We express deep satisfaction over the introduction of a special resolution on Kashmir and Kashmiri Pandits in the US House of Representatives by influential Democratic Congressman, Frank Pallone," Panun Kashmir, organisation for displaced Kashmiri Pandits, President Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo today said while addressing the executive council meeting.

The resolution was introduced yesterday by Pallone. This historic resolution in the US law making body vindicates the stand of the organisation that the Kashmiri Pandits, against whom acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing took place in their ancestral habitat, are the main victims of terrorist violence, aided and abetted by Pakistan, he said.

Frank Pallone is a great friend of India and has always supported the Indian cause in the US, he said.

We are thankful for introduction of the current resolution in the US House of Representatives which condemns the terrorist and extremist violence in Kashmir, lack of religious freedom and human rights violations committed against the Kashmiri Pandits, he added.

Pallone had insisted in his resolution that terrorist infrastructure in the region must be dismantled and the terrorists held accountable for their actions, he said.

The resolution moved by Pallone reflects his deep understanding of the historical and cultural moorings of the Kashmiri Pandits as the original inhabitants of Kashmir, he said.

The government should take lead from the resolution and appropriate and proactive measures must be taken against terrorism and also ameliorate the suffering of the Kashmiri Pandits who have been living as refuges in their own country for the last two decades, he said.

UN House admits Kashmiri Pandits resolution
Date: 8 Aug 2011
ISLAMABAD: The US House of Representatives has admitted for the first time its own member’s tabled resolution exclusively on Kashmiri Pandits and their ‘plight’ for debate, international reports said.

Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. (New Jersey), presented at the weekend in the House the resolution on a segment of the Kashmiri society, Pandits who displaced themselves to Jammu from Kashmir valley in IHK two decades ago on the instigation of Mr Jagmohan.

The APHC’s continuing efforts for the return of Kashmiri Pundits to the Valley have been partially successful.

The Pallone resolution chooses Pakistan as the main butt of criticism. The Kashmir Solution Seekers (KSS) in their comment Monday here said that it would have been far better for Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. if he had introduced in the House of Representatives the whole gamut of the ongoing dispute over Jammu and Kashmir and the plight of Kashmiris facing prolonged uncertainties arising out of the unresolved Kashmir issue.

“All fair democratic credentials demand that the UN Security Council-entertained dispute over Kashmir must be given serious attention to, for settlement by the elected Houses the world over”, the KSS urged. Since 1947 much beyond 600,000 Kashmiris have laid down their lives in pursuance of their struggle for fulfillment of the UN-promised right to self-determination, the KSS asserted.
