Srinagar, Jul 18 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government today said it is working on a proposal to introduce amendments in the Public Safety Act (PSA), a law which is being widely criticised by human rights body.
"We have a proposal in the Law department to carry out some amendments in the PSA and the Law Secretary and his secretariat is working on it," JK Law Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar told reporters here.
PSA, which provides detention of a person for two years without any trial, has been widely criticized by human rights groups. The Act also provides for custodial detention of anyone above 16 years of age.
An Amnesty International report had recently termed PSA a "lawless law" and said the Act is being used to secure long- term detention of individuals against whom there is insufficient evidence for a trial.
